My top 5 guilty pleasures - music edition

On my iPod, I have close to 20,000 songs or so.  Most of that is music I am very proud to own, and I certainly would not mind listening to it in public with the windows down.  That being said, I do have some tunes that I want to keep to myself.  Of those, here are my top 5 (and some attempt at justification at each).  Keep in mind, I don’t listen to these a lot, but if I can’t decide what to listen to, one (or all) of these will do the trick:

5.  Britney Spears - Stronger

I think the video for this song originally got me hooked, or maybe it’s the refrain of the last chorus, but whatever it is, this song has a pretty solid groove!

4.  N’Sync - Dirty Pop

On a production level, this song is so complex, I can listen to it over and over again, and each time hear a new sound effect or loop.  And yeah, I guess the “we don’t take crap from anyone because we’re N’-stinkin’-Sync” theme of the song is ok.  But listen to it, and you’ll find yourself singing DDDDDDDDDDDDirty pop, y-y-y-y-y-you can’t stop”.

3.  Backstreet Boys - Everybody

“Dun, dun dun dun dun dun, dun, dun dun dun, O my God, we’re back again, dun, dun nuh nuh.”  This song has a great beat, tune, plus I ripped it off several years ago when I needed a beat for a remix I made.  I’m THAT guy that when the line comes on, “am I sex-u-al”, I always say “Noooo, ooooo”.

2.  Various - Lady Marmalade

Christina Aguelara (sp?) has a great set of pipes (read: vocal chords), and she uses every bit of them in this song.  Also, Pink sounds pretty good in this song.  Plus, how often do you get to sing in French?

1.  Hanson - Mmmm Bop

If you have a list similar to this, most likely this song is somewhere on it.  I will freely admit that this song is one of the catchiest dang songs I have ever heard.  Plus, when the video came out, I thought “Hey, that girl lead singer is kind of cute”.  Then I found out she was a he.  Now that I think about that, I kind of wish I had not revealed that here.  All that aside, this is a fun song about who-knows-what, but it tops my list of guilty pleasure songs.

So, what are yours??

UPDATE:  Celie Dion’s “The Power of Love” falls somewhere in this list.  Just sayin…

Dirty Pop’s a good song. Celebrity as a whole was a decent album if I remember correctly.

Not sure I can overlook this Mmmm Bop business though. Tsk, tsk.

  2. Adam Says:

It’s a fun song! Come on man!

  3. Toby and Ria Says:

Ok, the girl lead singer just put RockStar energy drink all over my screen. Thanks for that!!

  4. Adam Says:

you have to admit, he DID look and sound like a girl at first.

  5. Mackalicious Says:

Celine Dion, Cher, Scissor Sisters, Mika…yep, raise your hand if you’re a total homo. (I slowly raise my arm).

  6. Adam Says:

You just reminded me of one not on the list. But, um, Cher? Come on dude.

I hate that Mmm Bop is so catchy! Next thing you know you’re singing it for the rest of the day. I would have to put something from New Kids on the Block on my guilty pleasure list. But I’m not overly embarrassed by that so maybe that doesn’t count. Hmm, maybe Vanilla Ice then? Yep, that works.

  8. Adam Says:

Oooo, those are good ones for the list too. Word to yo motha’.

    Hmmm…Let’s see

Artist/songs by that I would be completely embarrassed to have people know that I listen too… let alone blare from my radio:

    John Denver
    Neil Diamond
    Barry Manalow
    Barbara Streisand
    Bread
Old ( and new) Rod Stewart
    Air Supply

(BTW, I’m old so it only makes sense that my embarrassment list would have Old people on it)

You do realize that because you now know of my list, I shall have to kill you…right?

  12. Adam Says:

you know my list as well, so I will have to kill you first!

  13. Matt Says:

I’ll admit that I have some music that I listen to with the windows to the car up, but nothing that bad. Note to self: Don’t let this guy DJ anymore events.

  14. Adam Riggins Says:

6 words: Man, I Feel Like a Woman.

I know you have that one.

  15. scottie Says:

Isn’t that supposed to be “You make me feel like a natural woman? or wasn’t it ‘Dude looks like a lady’?

(Ouch! sorry, I know my joke is terrible…)

  16. adam Says:

Hey, those are 2 great songs, one bad joke (jk)!

  17. Matt Says:

Sorry dude…here are some of the ones from my iTunes: Living in America (James Brown), Sexyback (Timberlake), Paradise by the Dashboard Lights (Meatloaf), and anything off of the “Here I Am” CD (just kidding).

Other than that, I have a lot of embarassing songs that have added up from different youth events over the years.

My son and I laugh at each other when we see some guy with “pretty hair”. It is just a habit we got into. Hanson would qualify as having pretty hair.

FYI, the both of us have hair so short you couldn’t grab it after it is cut.

  19. adam Says:

    Meatloaf. Ha!

And hey, anything off of my cd’s should not be listened to in public. I will go ahead and admit that myself!

  20. adam Says:

@MTAE - it really is “pretty”. And, being that they are dudes, it is pretty funny. And, I try and keep my hair short like that too!

  21. Matt Says:

Just to clarify…this is not the “I Would Do Anything For Love” type of Meatloaf. I don’t want you to think I’m some sissy.

  22. adam Says:

Riiiiiight. Wait, that is a good song. The ‘Loaf has a heart, man.

  23. scottie Says:

    did some one mention Meatloaf?!

  24. Adam Says:

    a Meatlof fan I see… heh heh
