It became real last night

It’s an odd thing.  When I was in high school, my mom would buzz my head whenever I needed a haircut.  We would go out to the back deck, I’d sit down, and she would buzz my hair off.  It was a way to save a lot of money on haircuts, and it was a bonding experience every time.

Last night, we revisited that scenario, only the roles we reversed.  I was buzzing my mom’s hair off.  For the last few months, she has had breast cancer.  Several weeks ago she started chemo, and only recently has she started to lose her hair.  Knowing that it would soon all fall out, mom decided she wanted to buzz it all off.  So we went out to the back deck of her house, she sat down in the same place I would, and using the very same clippers she used to use on me, I buzzed her hair off.  To show support, she buzzed mine right afterwards.

My girlfriend and step dad both came during the process, and we all were laughing, crying, and most importantly, supporting my mom while the entire situation became so much more real to her (and all of us).

I hate that my mom has to go through this, and although she is expected to make a full recovery, it still hurts.  But, she is strong, and her attitude has been unbelievably incredible.  Her goal is to make sure that God is glorified, and let me tell you, she has been doing a wonderful job of that.

And hey, I think she looks pretty darn good with buzzed hair!

If I were to get a tattoo…

…it would be this:

in case you cannot read Hebrew, it is Isaiah 53:5, which translated, reads:

But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was upon him,
and by his wounds we are healed.

And, in case you still have no idea what I am talking about, that is a verse out of the Bible.  It refers to Jesus, and the awesome part was that it was written hundreds of years before he was born and accurately tells of his mission.

I have always thought that Hebrew looks really cool, and that verse sums up the entire Bible, so it seems like something worth inking my body with.  People would say “hey, what’s that mean?”, and BAM.  An open door to talk about the most important of things.

By the way, I have been thinking about this for 10 years now.  Needless to say, this might be the closest I ever get to actually getting a tattoo.  But at least you know!

(if you actually can read Hebrew, there is a small chance that I have the verse backwards.  I know Hebrew is written right to left, and I’m not sure if the translator I used took that into consideration :)

BigRigg Challenge : week 10 weigh-in

I accidentally skipped last week’s weigh-in.  But, that might have been a good thing because my birthday was right in the middle of last week, and it seems like every night I was going out to dinner, and it was ugly.  That being said, this past week has been a recovery from last week’s eating, so I guess I can’t be THAT disappointed at the results:

Stats:

  • Initial Weight: 241.4 lbs
  • Weight after this week’s weigh-in: 251.2 lbs
  • This week’s +/- :  +.6 lbs
  • Total lost:  GAINED 10.8 lbs

BigRigg Challenge : Week 7 weigh-in

The big change this week was that I cut out softdrinks from my diet (minus 2 meals).  It was really tough at first, but I replaced that craving with tea, and it seems to have worked pretty well.  Apparently softdrinks have a lot of sodium (among other chemicals), and that can lead to retaining water.  So I contribute some of this success to that change.

By the way, if you want to try some of the tea I was drinking, head over to Teavana‘s website and look at the Raspberry Riot Lemon Mate.  It is so good!

On to the video…

Stats:

  • Initial Weight: 241.4 lbs
  • Weight after this week’s weigh-in: 240.6 lbs
  • This week’s +/- :  -1.8 lbs
  • Total lost: GAINED -0.8 lbs

BigRigg Challenge : Week 6 weigh-in

**Info on the BigRigg Challenge**

VICTORY! Well, I mean, I lost a pound, but considering I have been working on toning up and gaining muscle, I think it is a success. Also, for this coming week, I have decided to give up soft drinks altogether. That means I will have to say goodbye to my beloved Diet Coke with Lime. :( It will be worth it though.

On to the video:

  • Initial Weight: 241.4 lbs
  • Weight after this week’s weigh-in: 242.4 lbs
  • +/- :  -1.0 lbs
  • Total lost: GAINED 1.0 lbs
