    Cannonball

    April 30th, 2008

I’m a big fan of music, and even more of a fan of picking apart lyrics and relating them to my own life. So, let’s look at one of my favorite songs ever…

Here is a video of me covering Damien Rice’s song “Cannonball”. Also, here are the lyrics, followed by my thoughts on it:

there’s still a little bit of your taste in my mouth
there’s still a little bit of you laced with my doubt
it’s still a little hard to say what’s going on

there’s still a little bit of your ghost your weakness
there’s still a little bit of your face i haven’t kissed
you step a little closer each day
    that I can´t say what´s going on

    stones taught me to fly
love, it taught me to lie
life, it taught me to die
so it’s not hard to fall
when you float like a cannonball

there’s still a little bit of your song in my ear
there’s still a little bit of your words i long to hear
you step a little closer to me
so close that I can´t see what´s going on

    stones taught me to fly
    love taught me to lie
    life taught me to die
so its not hard to fall
when you float like a cannon..

    stones taught me to fly
    love taught me to cry
so come on courage, teach me to be shy
‘cos its not hard to fall,

and I don’t want to scare her
    its not hard to fall
and i don’t want to lose
    its not hard to grow
when you know that you just don’t know

Have you ever acted a certain way for no other reason than the fact that it just seemed right to you? Specifically related to love and relationships, have you ever had feelings for someone or done something out of love (or what you thought was love) that just made no sense at all?

To me, that’s what this song says at parts. “Stones taught me to fly…”. Stones are heavy and don’t fly. It doesn’t make sense for something to teach you about flying that would not fly well at all. “Love taught me to lie” and “life taught me to die” are the same thing. It’s almost like one extreme taught him to do the other extreme.

So maybe in this song, he has done things in a relationship that maybe he shouldn’t have done. Things that seemed right at the time, but might not have made sense, and it has caused a rift in that relationship. And maybe by the end, he wants the courage that led him to do whatever, to make him shy. Only then will he not do it again.

I dunno, what do you think?

Energy Drink Review: “Amp Energy Overdrive”

    April 29th, 2008

I have to give credit to Jason for this one. On yesterday’s post, he suggested MDX (Mountain Dew Extreme) as an energy drink to try. I went to the store this morning on my way in to work and looked for it, but the only Mountain Dew- branded energy drink I could find was called Amp Energy Overdrive.  It’s not what he suggested, but it led me to this one.

It is sort of like Code Red with a kick. It has a cherry flavor, and is actually pretty darn good. I know you have to have a little slack with most energy drinks, but this one has a great taste, and it certainly has helped wake me up.

I have one more to try this afternoon. We’ll see how that goes, but for now, I am happy with the Amp Energy.

    Blog name

    April 25th, 2008

I have been racking my mind recently in trying to think of a name for this blog other than “adam.riggins”. I only named it that originally because it’s my name, and at the time, I wasn’t feeling particularly creative.

Past names for this site have been “Check Please?!” and “1,2,4,5… So What!”. Maybe I should go back to one of those titles.

What are your thoughts on naming a blog after your own name?

    Redbox - rent dvd’s for $1/day - BRILLIANT

    April 23rd, 2008

For the last few weeks, I have been trying out the “Redbox” machine at my local Wal Mart.  Basically, it is a machine about the size of a Coke machine, located right next to the Coke machines at many Wal Marts (and other places) across the country.  You can rent DVDs from it for $1 per day, and your credit card is charged once you return the dvd.  After renting several movies from it, I can honestly say that I love the service.

First of all, I live about 5 minutes from a Wal Mart, so it’s convenient.  I can drive over there, pick up a dvd, go watch it, and then return it by 9pm the following day, all for a buck.  That’s cheap!

The dvd itself is the retail dvd, just in a different case, so you are not missing out on anything that you would get if you bought it.  The machine itself is very easy to operate, and within a few minutes, you can be in and out with a handful of dvds to go watch.  You can even reserve movies online, so when you get to the kiosk, you just swipe your card, and it spits the movies out.

Yesterday, the movie Cloverfield came out on DVD.  So at around 9 am, I went online and reserved that dvd in the machine at my local Wal Mart.  Later that night, I went and picked it up, took it home, and watched it.  All for a dollar.

Head over to Redbox to see if there is a location near you.

And no, they did not pay me to write this!

    The Varsity - followup

    April 19th, 2008

I wanted to post something I just read regarding The Varsity, which I posted about yesterday. Here is a great description of it:

    The Varsity

Since 1928, servers at the “World’s Largest Drive-in Restaurant” have been shouting out “Welcome to the Varsity” and asking customers “What’ll ya have?” The chili dog, streaked with yellow mustard and served on a pillow-soft bun, is the classic offering. But regulars go for the crunchy onion rings, fresh French fries, Creamsicle-like frosted orange (”FO”) and syrupy fried pies. The most famous car hop, Flossy Mae, may no longer be around to sing the menu, but the Varsity is always a fun place to eat. And a great destination for out-of-town guests.

ifoundme, that sounds good, doesn’t it?!

This Soldier May Have Manley-est name ever

    April 16th, 2008

Lieutenant-General Sir Manley Power (1773 – July 7, 1826) was a British military leader who fought in a number of campaigns for Britain and rose to the rank of Lieutenant General. He is chiefly remembered for leading a brigade of Portuguese troops under The Duke of Wellington in the Iberian Peninsular War.

    And, his name rules.

I love clever advertising. Here are some of the most original advertising ideas I have seen. Some of these are downright creepy, but creative nonetheless. Go to Adhunt to see tons more. Click each picture for the full-sized pic.

FOLLOW-UP: Toys For Tots Does About Face On Jesus Dolls

    November 16th, 2006

(CBS4) BOSTON Toys for Tots has decided to accept a toymaker’s gift of 4,000 bible-quoting Jesus dolls after all.

The program run by the Marine Corps Reserves had initially decided not to take the 12-inch tall religious figures from a California company because they didn’t want to take a chance that the dolls would end up going to someone who might be offended by them.

Bill Grein, vice president of Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, in Quantico, Va., said Toys for Tots doesn’t know anything about the religious affiliations of the children who receive its gifts.

“We can’t take a chance on sending a talking Jesus doll to a Jewish family or a Muslim family,” Grein said Tuesday. “Kids want a gift for the holiday season that is fun.”

But a spokesman told CBS4 Wednesday they changed their minds and decided to accept the dolls from the Beverly Hills Teddy Bear Co.. Toys for Tots refused further comment.

According to the company’s Web site, the button-activated, bearded Jesus doll recites Scripture such as “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again” and “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

Marine Sgt. Paul McCawley, who heads Toys for Tots in western Massachusetts, told the Boston Herald his chapter would have “regretfully declined the offer” out of “political correctness” had it occurred here.

Each Toys for Tots chapter collects its own gifts.

They distributed 18 million stuffed animals, games, toy trucks and other gifts to children based on financial need in 2005.
