Song of the week - “What You Want” by Caedmon’s Call

“What You Want” is a song by Caedmon’s Call that is one of my top 5 songs of all time, and for 2 reasons.  First of all, the lyrics are simple yet have a big impact.  Also, the way that Derek Webb sings parts of it is just awesome.  He tends to scream at certain parts for emphasis, and in mixing, they added a lot of reverb to those parts.  I have bold-ed the parts I am referring to in the lyrics below.  Press the little play button to listen.

What You Want by Caedmon’s Call

You’re softer than a cannon blast
But your effects much longer last
And I want you just like a hole in my head
But I need you like a meal and a bed
And you say, “Come on, I’m not what you’re after.”
But I know you’re not just anyone, anyone

But I’m not what you want
No, I’m not anyone
But if you needed me
Then I could be someone

And you’re an army in a horse
And you have taken me by force
And all the freedom in this world could not resist
The sweet temptation of your sweet elusiveness
So I say “Come on!” as the gate swings open
Cause I know you’re not just anyone, anyone
And the lie’s always cheaper than the truth
But the lie’s all I’ve ever known of you
Maybe none of this is true

But I’m not what you want
No, I’m not anyone
But if you needed me
Then I could be someone

Somewhere North

Here is a song that I have been listening to over and over again. It’s called Somewhere North by a band called Caedmon’s Call. Click the little play button next to the link below to hear it. Also, the lyrics are below to follow along. I see this as one of those songs that can speak to different people on several levels. Enjoy!

Somewhere North

It’s a muggy night in Houston
And all the intersections are like full service stations
I’m on my way to a familiar place
It’s cold in Kansas City
And you can no more hear me than I can see your face
How I wish it was just you and me

We wouldn’t have to talk above the crowd
We wouldn’t have to talk so loud

I give you my life and all I am
But what I have to give
So I hand you a candid photograph of this little boy
‘Cause I have nothing to my name
But I can give you that

I don’t miss the driving
Seems like forever
And I’m always driving in my mind
And wearing out the road that gets me there

And I’m driving till my eyes just can’t see straight
But I suppose that it’s getting late

I may never find the sleep
I’ve lost all feeling in my hands and
Feet may touch the ground but
My mind’s somewhere north of here

Video Vednesday - I Want a Broken Heart

In my attempt to have a catchy weekly blog post thing that has matching first letters in the title, I have decided to start what I am calling “Video Vednesday”. Say it like the count from Sesame Street: Viiiideo Veeeednesday, ah ah ah”. Okay, I have de-railed. For those of you that are miraculously still reading, here we go:

Here is my cover of Derek Webb’s “I Want a Broken Heart”. By the way, if you watch Grey’s Anatomy, you heard one of Derek’s songs a few episodes ago. Anyways, enjoy!
