Cost to Drive - How much it costs to drive somewhere

I posted on something like this before, but if you are going to take a trip, this might be a helpful tool in planning your expenses.  For example, if I had driven my own car down to go camping last week, it would have cost me roughly $35:

This is cool because it gives you some more info besides the cost.  Plus, there are links for actual directions if you want them.

As seen while driving…

On my way to trivia tonight, I pulled up to a red light. The can in front of me had the following license plate:

Is it wrong to want to slap someone for that? It says “Prynses” for crying out loud!

How much does it cost you to drive one mile?

If you know just how much it costs to drive around town, it might keep you from making unnecessary trips, thus, saving you money.  So, how much does it cost for you to drive a mile?  Don’t know?  That’s ok, here’s how you find out:

  • Next time you fill up your gas tank, reset your odometer.
  • Then, when you have to fill up again, take note of how much it costs to fill up
  • Divide the fill-up cost by the number of miles you were able to drive on that last tank.
  • Bada bing, bada boom, there is your average cost-per-mile (at least for that tank)

For me, it’s right at $.25/mile.  It really puts things into perspective when I realize that to drive across town, it will cost me 10 bucks or so EACH WAY.  Maybe I should just stay home!

Anyways, do this and report back.  OR, if you already have, what’s the damage?

A Ford with a Fridge

“you can keep six packs of b… soda in there” (name the movie for extra points)

The new Ford Flex has an option where you can have a small refrigerator between the front seats under the armrest. From the looks of it, you can put around 3cans of whatever in there and it will keep them cold:

In normal operation it can take drinks from room temperature, at 77 degrees Fahrenheit, down to 41 degrees in two- and-a-half hours. It also has a freezer option that can get keeps items a chilly 23 degrees F. And it is sealed well enough so that it takes almost three hours for the temperature to go up just 18 degrees F.

Anyone else think that this is an awesome idea? I wish that it was a little bigger, but other than that (and the $760), it rules!

Motorcycle Business Man

I saw this on the way to work this morning:

You can’t really tell from the picture, but this guy was obviously going to work judging by his dress pants/shoes.  I thought it was just cool that he was getting there on a crotch-rocket.  After the light turned, he FLEW down the road.  I guess he was running late.

O, and how about my stellar crack in my windshield?

Oh, you “no turn on red even though it’s allowed” people!

A quick rant…

Something that bothers me is when you are 2nd in line at a red light, waiting to turn right.  “If only”, you think to yourself, “I could have been first in line, I could have already turned by now”.   So you wait.  And wait.  And then finally, the light turns green.  What does the person in front of you do (remember, they are first inline at the light)?  They turn right!  Why couldn’t they have turned right when the light was red?  There was no one coming and they could see that.  Why did they have to delay my trip?  Why, I ask.  WHY?

New Feature: Thursday’s Things That Bother Me

Hopefully this will be a weekly feature of this website. Every Thursday, I will talk about one thing that bothers me. Mostly it will be petty stuff that in the grand scheme of things really does not matter. That being said, certain little things do bother me. So that being said, here we go…

People who talk on their cell phones while driving, and it actually makes them drive worse

I can talk and drive at the same time. I prioritize driving over talking, so the conversation might suffer a bit, but by golly, I will be a good driver and not slow the world down.distraction.jpg

Tonight, I was driving home from band practice and got behind a minivan going 5 under the speed limit. There was only one lane going in each direction, so passing was out of the question. I was trying to get home quickly (and safely, of course), and this lady was just chuggin’ along. Finally, I was able to pass her, and upon looking in my rear view mirror, I noticed that she was just chatting away on the cell phone, hand motions and all.

This really bothers me, because to that person, they are so focused on their ever-so-important conversation, and their driving is suffering because of that. Please, for goodness sake, if you cannot drive the same on the phone as you do off the phone, GET OFF THE PHONE WHILE DRIVING.

Whew. I’m ok now. Thanks for reading.
