Nothing new to see
Jun 26, 2008 Internet, Uncategorized
Here’s the scenario: You’re at work between “things”. Whether it’s a lag between meetings, or it’s Friday and nothing is really going on anyways. You fire up your web browser, visit your usual sites (cnn.com, digg.com, adamriggins.com, whatever). At some point, you have seen all you are really interested in at the time. What do you do at that point?
For example, I have a meeting in about 20 minutes. I am as prepared for it as I can be. So, here’s what I do:
- check my gmail
- open up Google Reader and look at all of the new stories to come through
- go to the restroom
- come back to my desk
- check gmail/google reader again
By this point, there is nothing new. What do you do when you get bored sufing the internet and/or your RSS newsreader has no new updates?
Why you should make Firefox 3 your web browser
Jun 12, 2008 Internet, Just Plain Awesomeness
I just saw this short video of some of the new features coming in Firefox 3. For anyone using Internet Explorer (you know, the blue “e” that you click on to get to my website), you might want to consider switching. Firefox 3 comes out this month, so make sure you bookmark Firefox and download it when it becomes available.
Netflix vs. Apple TV
Jan 3, 2008 Movies, Technology

It looks like Netflix will be releasing a set-top box soon that will allow the streaming of video from the PC to the TV. There are already a bunch of flavors of this technology out there, but Netflix’s solution will also have their movie library available, along with other video content. Currently, Netflix has something where you can watch around 6000 movies or so on your pc instantly, but this new device would be a stand-alone box, allowing you to break free from the PC.
The Apple TV is another stand-alone box that streams video from a mac/pc, and its advantage is that it can play iTunes-purchased content, something that no other player can currently do. Apple TV was named the best Internet-based TV device, so I think it will be the main competition to Netflix’s solution, especially since Apple will most likely begin to offer rentals through iTunes.
This is where I become a bit torn. I love Netflix for what they are best at, which is the through-the-mail dvd rentals. But, I love the AppleTV as well, especially if they can get the rental approach nailed down.
Who do you think will win this fight? Either way, I think we all win.
Test Your Internet Connection Speed

Here is a great site that will test the speed of your internet connection. It is a great way to make sure you are really getting that 6Mbps speed you have been promised by the cable company. It has a great graphical interface that is extremely easy to understand, and gives you very detailed results when the test is over. Here is a picture:

YouTube Wins TIME Magazine’s "Invention of the Year"

“Meet Peter. Peter is a 79-year-old English retiree. Back in WW II he served as a radar technician. He is now an international star.
One year ago, this would not have been possible, but the world has changed. In the past 12 months, thousands of ordinary people have become famous. Famous people have been embarrassed. Huge sums of money have changed hands. Lots and lots of Mentos have been dropped into Diet Coke. The rules are different now, and one website changed them: YouTube.”
