Podcasts - What I listen to

Let me just tell you how much I love podcasts. “Podcasts”, you say? Yes. A podcast is basically like a radio show, only it is distributed over the internet through mediums like iTunes. They are free, and every time a new episode comes out, it automatically downloads to your computer/iPod/mp3 player. There are podcasts for any subject you can think of. Tech, sports, finance, news, comedy… all are represented well!

So, here are the ones I listen to (with links, some straight to iTunes):

TWiT - A round table discussion of the week’s biggest tech stories and industry news

Macbreak Weekly - See above, just all things Macintosh

Net @ Night - Looking at new trends in internet-related things

Diggnation - Video podcast, covers the most “dugg” stories from Digg.com

Phone Taps - A radio station in New York pranks phone calls people

Best of YouTube - Popular Youtube videos.

Totally Rad Show - Video reviews of movies, tv, and video games

Geek Brief - a daily 5-minute video podcast covering tech trends

Maccast - One guy talks about all things Macintosh

Sure, I know these are mostly geeky, but whatever. That’s me! So head over to iTunes and browse the Podcast category. They are all free, and you are sure to find something you’ll like!

Amazon or iTunes - I prefer Amazon

Chris Rock reference, anyone??

I have been using the iTunes store for several years now, and loving it all the while, but I have recently started using Amazon’s mp3 store.  I have to say, I like it a lot better.  The songs are cheaper, no DRM, better quality, and the downloader automatically send the songs to iTunes, which means they work with any iPod.  The songs still come with the artwork which iTunes accepts, so it seems like a no-brainer to me.  The only downside is that some new releases do not show up on there until a week or so later, and the selection is a little limited at times.  But if choosing between the 2, I will choose Amazon for buying the music, iTunes for organizing it.

Anyone tried out Amazon mp3 store yet?

What I do all day

2008-02-27-731751.JPG

No, I don’t look at my monitor and rock out to whatever is on my iPod. At least, not all day.

I use a program called WebEx to give virtual demonstrations of Nortel business phone equipment to potential customers (small businesses). That means several cameras set up in my cube at work all pointing at phones, etc. I can show how certain things are done on these phones, and 9 times out of 10, the customer loves it and wants to buy. The customer also can see me, which puts a personal touch on dealing with a massive company like the one I work for.

So, what do you do all day?

Use a Zune with iTunes?

zune4-green.jpgI do not own a Zune, and I have been accused of bashing the Zune in the past. Well, I have to say, it actually is a great device, and if I had a pc and did not absolutely love my my iPod, I would strongly consider getting one. So this post serves as my first official “pro-Zune” post. Mark the date.

Anyway, there is a program that looks like it will let you use your Zune with other sync programs (like Windows Media Player, iTunes, etc). I have no way of trying it out, but if it does what it says it will, you would essentially be able to sync up your Zune with iTunes and have any DRM-free music copy over to it. Now that is cool.

MacWorld - What to expect

I love how Apple is really good at keeping me in suspense. MacWorld is coming up in just a few days, and there will be new products that are finally revealed. For example, maybe a new iPod with a larger screen. Or hey, how about the iTV that we are all waiting on. Whatever they announce, I know that it is going to take all that I am not to go run out and by it. (Then again, when you are broke, that problem kind of solves itself).

Anyways, I will post more when I learn more.

This picture is an example of how boring it has been at work this week. Not much of a blog entry here, but I am sure that will change as the week goes on.

I saw a website once where people took pictures like this of places they had been, with the place in the iPod reflection. That is a cool idea, maybe I will do more of that later.

iPod Death Clock

As an iPod owner, one of my biggest fears in life is one day, hitting play on the ol’ iPod, and nothing happens. You see, iPods have a lifespan. How long that life is is anyone’s guess. But luckily, there is a website that will help you figure it out.

All you need is the seial number from your iPod, which is conveniently located on the back of it.

Enjoy!
